The shape of a sector of a circle can be compared with a slice of pizza or a pie. It is a portion of the circle formed by a portion of the arc and radii of the circle at both endpoints of the arc. SectorĪ sector is said to be a part of a circle made of the arc of the circle along with its two radii. The logo of First Aid and medical stores also use a red coloured cross to indicate availability of medicine. The shape of a crucifix found in a church is called a cross. CrossĪ cross is a special kind of square, which you can easily recognize by the four congruent lines that divide it into quarters. An oblong dosa cooked on a pan is usually oval in shape. OvalĪn oval is a quadrilateral with one pair of parallel sides that are congruent. You will find hearts drawn on many greeting cards as a symbol of love and affection. It us used to denote a person’s heart and emotions, however, an actual human heart looks much different from this shape. HeartĪ heart is a special kind of parallelogram, which you can easily recognise by the two congruent triangles on its sides. The star fruit and star fish are so named as they resemble this shape. When you look at the stars in the sky, the light that gets reflected in rays gives it the shape that we recognise as a star. Star is the shape of an unbounded polygon. With the exception of a regular hexagon, the lengths of the sides are not necessarily equal. The hexagon shape is a six-sided polygon with all six angles equal. A simple drawing of a small hut can be depicted by learning how to draw a pentagon. A standard pentagon has 5 equal sides and angles. The pentagon (five-sided polygon) is a common shape found in nature and engineering. Most of the generic cookies and biscuits come in a circular shape. CircleĪ circle is a simple closed shape on a plane, such that every point on the circle is at an equal distance from the centre. Do you like flying kites? They are diamond-shaped. In geometry, diamonds are also referred to as a rhombus. DiamondĪ rectangle with four right angles and two sets of parallel, equal length sides that meet at a point is called a diamond. It is a geometric shape with the same symmetry as the square. The octagon has 8 sides, 8 vertices, and 6 edges. Take a close look at the sheets of paper in your notebook. It can be thought of as a rectangle that has had an extra line drawn for its side. A square, on the other hand, is a four-sided shape that has four right angles. The length of the rectangle is equal to its width. The rectangle is a four-sided shape with two right angles. Small windows, cushions and even bread slices are square shaped. The term “square” has been used to describe this shape since the 16th century, and it derives from the French “quatre” meaning four. A quadrilateral is the general name for a four-sided object. SquareĪ square is a quadrilateral with four equal sides and four right angles. When you draw a table lamp, the shade on top is typically a trapezoid. In the context of mathematics, it is also referred to as just “trapezium.” It has been said that “a good mathematician would never design a building out of an equilateral triangle.” Eg. We also have some Holiday Shape Activities & Crafts. The trapezoid is a quadrilateral with no parallel sides, which means its two pairs of opposite sides are not equal in length. Here are some General Shape Activities & Crafts. You might find yourself doing shape activities and crafts for days! If you click on each ling below you'll be taken to a full tutorial for each activity which in most cases will also include much larger photos. While putting this collection together I actually realized that we need to do a few more holiday shapes games to cover all of our favorite holidays! Some activities are more general and some tie better to a holiday, so I tried to seperate them a bit. This week I compiled some of our favorite shape activities and crafts into one big post so that I can have easy access to them and hopefully they'll be useful to you too! Last week we did a pumpkin shape game and now my preschooler and toddler are really interested in shapes and are talking about them a lot.
